The reason lies in the story of competition between Kartikeya and Gnaesha. Lord Shiva, being the father put out a competition and said that the first one to arrive here after having a round of the universe will be recognised as the eldest one. While, Kartikeya left on his vehicle peacock, his brother Ganesha simply took a round of their parents, calling them his universe. Watching the wisdom of Ganesha, Shiva recognised him as the eldest.
Mythology
Agni, the god of fire did not want to marry Swaha, the daughter of Daksha but later he was convinced and married her. We chant ‘Swaha’ when we pour offerings into Fire while ‘Havans’. It is because Swaha had gotten this boon that everyone will chant her name. By chanting her name, we convey to God that this mantra is finished.
However, Swaha asked her husband to make love her in bed. For which she transformed herself as the wives of saptrishis. She never transformed herself in Arundhati ( wife of the rishi) whom Agni wanted the most. Then, Skanda took birth.
